The tour crosses the south Simpson Desert west from Birdsville, exploring several of the desert tracks through South Australia before following roads less travelled up to Alice Springs. You will then visit the little-known Finke Gorge National Park to see first hand the beautiful landscapes that provided inspiration to renowned watercolourist Albert Namatjira. The final part of the tour will depart Alice Springs and follow the more remote route of Dr Cecil T. Madigan’s 1939 scientific expedition across the north Simpson Desert in the Northern Territory, finishing back in Birdsville. Combining the two very different desert crossings you will experience massive dunes, the valleys (or swales) between them, expansive salt pans, wide open spaces, a surprising variety of flora and fauna, and the most amazing view of the Milky Way once the sun sets. And the two crossings are separated by the ‘must do’ Finke Gorge with its stunning landscapes, red gorges, desert palms and picturesque waterholes.
